State of the Union

Brad Troemel has started a fierce debate regarding the state of internet art at the blog bien-pensant. You can read my comment and some amazing responses by community members and participators from the recent show BYOB organized by Rafael Rozendaal.

  1. Well, not all community members/participants.

  2. Well, my comment on the Troemel thread appeared 12 hours after I posted it and 8 minutes after I complained on my blog that it had been suppressed. One wonders what other criticisms of Troemel are lingering in the moderation queue. Paddy Johnson had a good follow-up: "Troemel has produced an essay responding to the gallery system with very little experience within it and it shows. This garbage about the two tiered system is a ridiculous simplification of the motivations of artists and anyone who’s been out of art school for more than a minute knows it."

  4. I haven't looked since this morning but I'm not sure I'd characterize the thread as a "fierce debate." It looks like Troemel writing his usual naive word salad and then responding to favored commenters about minor points. You wrote a good reply but Troemel hasn't responded to you, probably because he doesn't know what you are talking about. And everyone else is saying "F U Brad."

  5. Tom: Fair enough, the response has been mostly anti-Troemel, but I wouldn't characterize it as one-sided. Actually, the responses have been questioning Troemel's points from from a lot of different angles. Shows you what a diverse community can do. :P

  6. Right, but he doesn't respond to the substantive criticisms so it's not a real debate, just people trying to correct a troll. As I said your response was interesting but it pained me to see so much thought given to someone not interested in a real conversation.
